Praying for Sunday School Beginnings
Scripture Reading:
“But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’” — Matthew 19:14
The start of a new Sunday School year is filled with fresh crayons, familiar faces, and the soft hum of excitement as children find their places again. It is a time of beginnings — not only for our youngest disciples, but also for the communities who nurture them.
As families walk back through the doors after summer, we are reminded that Sunday School is not just a classroom. It is a sacred space. It is where children discover the stories of God’s love, where they begin to see themselves as part of the Body of Christ, and where they learn that their questions, laughter, and voices matter.
Welcoming children back is more than setting out name tags or organizing the supply shelves. It is an act of love grounded in prayer. Before we teach lessons or plan crafts, we pause and ask God to prepare our hearts:
“Lord, how can I help each child know they are beloved? How can I show them that this church is their home, too?”
Jesus welcomed children not as future disciples but as full members of God’s kingdom in the present moment. He knelt to meet them at eye level. He blessed them. He listened. When we follow His example, we remind children that they do not have to grow up to be part of God’s story — they are already in it.
Praying for our Sunday School ministries means asking the Holy Spirit to fill our classrooms with joy, our teachers with patience, and our children with a sense of wonder. It means trusting that even the smallest seeds of faith planted this year will grow into something beautiful.
Imagine what might happen if every church made prayer for children part of its regular rhythm — if leadership meetings, Sunday intercessions, and casual conversations all lifted up the spiritual lives of our youngest members. Our churches would not only teach about God’s love; they would become living reflections of it.
Prayer:
Faithful God, You call children by name and delight in their laughter.
As we begin this new Sunday School year, bless the children who will gather to learn, sing, and grow. Fill their hearts with curiosity and their minds with Your stories. Guide their teachers with patience, joy, and creativity. Help our whole church family create a space where every child belongs, and where Your love is known in every smile, every song, and every small hand held. In the name of Jesus, who welcomed the little ones, Amen.
